When everyone has a home

Housing advice for Northern Ireland

You are homeless if you haven’t got a suitable permanent home.  You might think that only people who sleep on the streets are homeless but Northern Ireland has a large number of “hidden homeless”. If your home is unsuitable for you to live in, or you have no right to stay in it you could be classified as homeless.

Homelessness can happen to anyone. It's important to know who can help you if you end up in this situation.  The Northern Ireland Housing Executive is legally responsible for helping people who are homeless in Northern Ireland.   Over 18,000 households asked the Housing Executive for help with homelessness in 2018/19.

The Housing Executive is the organisation that is legally responsible for helping homeless people and preventing homelessness in Northern Ireland.

You should normally go to the Housing Executive for help if you are worried about becoming homeless.  However, if you’re under 18 , Social Services may have to help you if you don’t have anywhere safe to live.

If you have nowhere safe to live, go to your local Housing Executive office or to your local Health & Social Care Trust and ask for help.

You may be able to get help from social services if the Housing Executive can't help. Social services may be able to provide you with accommodation, help you to get money for a deposit or help you to stay in your home if you are in danger of losing it.

Get advice as quickly as possible if you’re homeless or likely to be homeless. You can speak to one of our advisers at Housing Rights if you need to find out what your options are.

Get advice immediately if you think you might become homeless. The Housing Executive has a legal responsibility to give you advice and information on homelessness or you can speak to our advisers at Housing Rights. With the right help, you may be able to stay in or return to your home.

Hostels, nightshelters and foyers are types of temporary accommodation for homeless people. You need a referral from the Housing Executive or Social Services to get a place in some hostels , but there are others that can give you a room or a bed for the night you without a referral.
